The Sacred Garden Space. A Spiritual Journey

It doesn’t matter if you are an experienced gardener or just starting out; if you have a fully formed place of beauty or blank spot of earth; it doesn’t matter if you grow flowers or vegetables; if you have land or containers. Each green space has its own unique energy and spirits that we can connect with to improve both our lives and the plants. Nourishing them as they nourish our bodies, minds and souls. Connecting us to Nature and our own bodies in the process. As with all things Spiritual its about intention and is very personal. My hope for you is that you can see ways to connect to your green space in a way that is unique to you and the spirits it contains. My personal back ground is Witchy so my tools are flavoured from that perspective, but you can adapt the to your own personal spiritual beliefs. The Garden, Nature in general is non denominational, non judging and open to however feels right for us as beings sharing the space. Gardening, walking in Nature, really all activities that get you out into the green world; sooth bodies and souls, quiet our minds and let us be fully present in the moment; if we let them. Some purely physical benefits nature and gardening share is the exercise we get working with plants. I like to think of it as gardening yoga, and even have a yoga mat just for planting and working in the garden. Another benefit is the sunshine. Just like our plants, we need sun. It stimulates vitamin D production, wish aids in our body’s ability to produce a neurotransmitter that regulates our moods. Vitamin D also helps the body to absorb calcium and supports immune function. Another physical benefit to gardening is in the soil. Not only is it grounding and helps stabilize us, there is a bacterium in soil called “Mycobacterium vaccae”. Research has shown that this bacterium stimulates the production of a protein that results in less stress and anxiety. So even before we get into the mental and spiritual benefits of having a garden, there is scientific proof that shows it helps our bodies. Now if we look at the Spiritual side, our gardens area reflection of ourselves. They require care, patience and time. They need food, water, air, and sunlight. We need to keep their space clear of unwanted weeds so they have room to grow and the nourishment to thrive. Just as we need the same to thrive in our own lives and spiritual journey of growth. When we show our gardens love and patience (just like we need for ourselves) then grow and change with the circles of life. Seedling to plant to flower to fruit then to harvest and death, only to be reborn again in the next growing season. These Circles of Nature have so much to share with us and our own personal journeys. Stay tuned for more on the Nature Spirits and how to connect to them for the health of our gardens and ourselves.
